Greater Glenside lost some of its best this year. Below are community leaders, members of local law enforcement, volunteer firefighters, educators, students, clergy, physicians, and a centenarian who passed away in 2024.
Community Leaders
Mr. Thomas Francis Cleighton, an Elkins Park native and resident of Roslyn, peacefully passed away on Sunday, November 24 surrounded by his wife and children. He was 67 years old.
Mr. George Peter Endrigian, longtime co-owner of George’s Market at Dreshertown, passed away on Sunday, November 10. He was 73 years old.
Jodie Helene (Stein) Milkman, a Dresher native, 1987 graduate of Upper Dublin High School, and executive vice president of the Delaware River Waterfront Corp. (DRWC), passed away from ovarian cancer on Friday, November 1. She was 55.
The Honorable Henry M. Liss, a resident of Abington and retired District Judge, died Saturday, October 19. He was 95 years old.
Gregory John Wall, a graduate of Jenkintown High School and former Mayor of Jenkintown, passed away on August 29 surrounded by loved ones in New Bern, North Carolina. He was 70 years old.
Robert S. Migliaccio, Head of Security for the Keswick Theatre in Glenside, passed away on Friday, August 30. He was 63.
Herbert Charles Craft, co-founder of the Craft-Givnish Funeral Home in Abington Township, passed away on Monday, August 19 at Ann’s Choice in Warminster following a struggle with Alzheimer’s. He was 91 years old and had lived at the facility since 2010.
Sidney Malcom Gamburg, longtime co-owner of Gamburg’s Furniture in Hatboro, passed away on Wednesday, August 21 in his home in Lafayette Hill. He was 88.
Edward James Clark, a longtime fixture of Glenside’s soccer community, former owner of Glen Dobbins Ice Cream store in Glenside, and a Vietnam War veteran, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 11. He was 82 years old.
Ellen Formanek Tepper of Glenside, a professional harpist and award-winning artist and dancer, passed away on July 17 after several years of serious health challenges. She was 71.
Mordechai Rosenstein, a renowned Judaica painter and calligrapher and resident of Elkins Park, passed away on Tuesday, July 9. He was 90 years old.
Elizabeth A. Bradley-Shea, longtime owner of Lucky Dogz in Wyndmoor, passed away on Wednesday, April 10. She was 57 years old.
Mr. George Popper, co-owner of Jerzee’s Sports Bar & Pizzeria in Glenside, passed away on Sunday, April 7. He was 84.
Robert “Bob” A. Moretti, longtime resident of Jenkintown Borough and founder of Moretti Park at 435 Cedar Street, passed away on April 2. He was 69 years old.
Dorothy “Dottie” C. Montgomery, a longtime O’Neills Food Market employee and a resident of Roslyn and Hatboro, died on March 23 at the age of 85.
Bill Hall, longtime coordinator of Glenside’s 4th of July Parade and a legend in the minds of many, passed away on the morning of Thursday, April 4.
Conrad Edwin Schuler, known as “Conrad the Florist” in Elkins Park where he operated Flowers by Conrad since 1959, passed away on Friday, February 23 at Rydal Park. He was 86 years old.
Ron Watt, longtime owner of the Bike Works in Glenside, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 3. He was 76 years old.
Mary Louise Washington, a longtime resident of Elkins Park and an actively engaged member of her community, passed away on January 21. She was 83 years old.
Law Enforcement
Mr. Robert Krauser, a 1958 graduate of Cheltenham High School and a former officer with the Cheltenham Township Police Department, passed away peacefully at Transitions Hospice on October 26. He was two weeks shy of his 85th birthday.
Arthur “Art” Scena IV, a 2003 graduate of Cheltenham High School and an officer with the Phoenixville Police Department, passed away on Sunday, October 27. He was 39.
Volunteer Firefighters
Joseph W. Lutz, a Hatboro resident, 1956 Hatboro High School graduate, and longtime Enterprise Fire Company firefighter and dispatcher for the Hatboro and Horsham Police Departments, passed away on Thursday, September 19 at Christ’s Home Rehabilitation Center. He was 85.
Ken “Pony” Norman, a longtime member and former Chief of the Weldon Fire Company in Glenside, passed away in early February.
Richard Andrew Roatch, a longtime member and former Chief of the Abington Fire Company, died on Saturday, March 2, at his home surrounded by family. He was 91 years old.
Educators
Mrs. Phyllis (Ladd) Naylor, a former English teacher at Upper Moreland High School, passed away on Wednesday, December 11. She was 99.
Ms. Carlotta “Bunny” Schaffer, a former athletic director and head field hockey/girls’ basketball coach at Abington Senior High School, passed away on Thursday, November 28.
Mrs. Rose DiPinto, a longtime employee of La Salle College High School in Wyndmoor, passed away on Friday, October 18. She was 91 years old.
Dr. Matthew Theodore Powell, former President of Bishop McDevitt High School in Wyncote, passed away on Tuesday, September 24 in Silver Spring, Maryland. He was 55 years old.
James (Jim) Alvin Kilmer, longtime Health and Physical Education teacher and Varsity soccer coach in the Upper Moreland School District, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 16. He was 84.
Joan Liehe, a former instrumental music teacher in the Cheltenham Township School District, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones on Friday, August 20. She was 83 years old.
Mary Louise “Mitzi” O’Donnell, a former elementary school teacher in the Abington School District, passed away peacefully on August 19 in Temple University Hospital. She was 78 years old.
Mr. Charles J. Stamm, a 1967 Cheltenham High School graduate and former CHS social studies, special education, and TV production teacher, passed away on Monday, June 3, in Boynton Beach, Florida. He was 75 years old.
Daniel “Dan” L. Moyer, a 1964 graduate of Bishop McDevitt High School and “the Voice of the Lancers” football and basketball games, passed away on April 4 after a long battle with Progressive Supranuclear palsy. He was 77 years old.
Michael F. Galante, a former government and politics teacher at Bishop McDevitt High School in Glenside, died on Thursday, February 1. He was 71 years old.
Students
Makayla Ni’che Belton, a student at Abington Senior High School, passed away on October 6 in Seaford, Delaware. She was 18 years old.
Dylan Leskusky, a sophomore at La Salle College High School, died on Thursday, February 15.
Physicians
Dr. Michael Joseph Mastrangelo, a Jenkintown resident and longtime physician at Fox Chase Cancer Center, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 6th, 2024, at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. He was 86 years old.
Dr. Richard T. “Dick” Hostelley, a Jenkintown resident, 1961 graduate of Abington High School and a Board-certified Emergency Medicine Physician at Holy Redeemer Hospital (Abington Township), died peacefully at Abington Jefferson Hospital on December 1. He was 80 years old.
Dr. Andrew Newman, a longtime resident of Huntingdon Valley, graduate of Arcadia University (Glenside), US Army veteran, and former physician in the Air Force Reserves in Willow Grove, passed away peacefully in Huntingdon Valley on Tuesday, November 19. He was 86 years old.
Dr. Albert Knouse, Sr., a Glenside native, Cheltenham High School graduate, U.S. Army engineer, and physician, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 10. He was 94 years old.
Dr. Nathan Schnall, an Abington resident, WWII/Korean War veteran and longtime doctor, died Sunday, June 2, of heart failure. He was 99 years old.
Dr. Lee D. Simon, a Wyncote resident and a former professor of microbiology at Rutgers University, died peacefully on Thursday, May 2 at his home. He was 84.
Clergy
Reverend Edward Anthony Windhaus, retired Pastor Emeritus of St. James Parish in Elkins Park, passed away on Monday, September 9 at St. Joseph Manor in Meadowbrook. He was 79 years old.
Sr. Marigene Kennedy, OSF, a Wyncote native who served 71 years as a Franciscan Sister of Allegany, passed away on July 29 at the St. Elizabeth Motherhouse in Allegany, NY. She was 94 years old.
Mr. William E. Viss, an accomplished pianist and organist and Director of Evangelism at New Life Presbyterian Church in Glenside, passed away at Dock Woods, Lansdale, on Friday, July 26. He was 92.
Centenarians
Mrs. Claire T. Silverman, a 1942 graduate of Cheltenham High School and later Beaver College of Glenside (now Arcadia University), passed away peacefully on November 7 at Chandler Hall in Newtown at the age of 100.
