Mordechai Rosenstein, a renowned Judaica painter and calligrapher and resident of Elkins Park, passed away on Tuesday, July 9. He was 90 years old.
The Times of Israel and the Jewish Telegraphic Agency each chronicled Rosenstein’s career and signature pieces, including his brightly colored illuminations of Hebrew texts which still adorn Jewish homes, offices and synagogues.
One of his best-known pieces, based on the Biblical phrase “Justice, justice, you shall pursue” (Deuteronomy 16:20), is a frequent gift for Jewish lawyers and judges, the Agency wrote.
His art “has a modern way of looking at the Torah and a modern way of looking at the Hebrew alphabet because his pieces are not black and white people praying at the Wall,” Barry Magen, his business partner since 2003, told the Philadelphia Jewish Exponent in 2022. “It’s very bright and creative, full of color and full of life, and, really, the big thing is that they’re happy.”
According to his obituary, services were held on Wednesday, July 10.
