Cheltenham Township has been in a long-term dispute with the Archdiocese of Philadelphia regarding property taxes incurred by Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.
According to their coverage, the dispute began in 2014 when the archdiocese transferred the 200-acre property to a limited liability corporation.
“Church graveyards are typically exempt from property taxes”, The Inquirer said, “but after the cemetery was transferred to the LLC, Montgomery County revoked the exemption and notified Holy Sepulchre it would begin collecting for 2015”.
The owners of 3301 W Cheltenham Avenue have appealed the revocation and the county’s $9.1 million assessment in favor of their appraisal of $4.67 million. The Inquirer said the total amount owed by the township and the county is unclear but noted that the cemetery would owe over a million for 2026, a figure that includes school taxes.
In 2025, the township filed a motion to remove the judge. The case is still active though no new filings have been added to the court docket.
