Dr. Matthew Theodore Powell, former President of Bishop McDevitt High School in Wyncote, passed away on Tuesday, September 24 in Silver Spring, Maryland. He was 55 years old.

According to his obituary, Dr. Powell “was known for his intelligence, his sense of social justice, outrageous sense of humor, love of all kinds of music, and his devotion to family and friends.”

Dr. Powell received a bachelor’s degree in Liberal Studies from the University of Notre Dame, a master’s at New York University, and a Ph.D. in Religious Studies/Literature.

Services will be held at Collins Funeral Home, 500 University Boulevard West, Silver Spring, MD, on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Bernadette’s Church, 72 University Blvd. East, Silver Spring, MD, on Wednesday, October 2, 2024 at 11:30am.
