Family of man fatally shot in Glenside apartments files wrongful death suit against Abington police

The family of Wyleek Tinsley, a nineteen-year-old man fatally shot by police on March 6, has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Abington Township and the officers involved in the incident, 6ABC reported.

Tinsley, who was reportedly unarmed, was shot after police responded to a violent domestic dispute at the Rosemore Gardens apartment complex (2300 block of Rosemore Avenue) in Glenside at approximately 11:15am. Officers had received reports of gunshots and heard an additional gunshot after arriving on the scene, which was followed by screaming from an adult female victim inside, police said.

The family began asking for the release of police bodycam footage in April. The family’s lawyer previously said he plans to file a civil rights lawsuit in federal court in order to subpoena the bodycam footage. The suit, which was filed today, alleges that the family has not received any information about his death from the police department or prosecutors, including a copy of the autopsy report.

Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin R. Steele announced on April 14 that the investigation of the shooting found that police officers’ use of force was deemed lawful. According to the announcement, detectives interviewed “numerous officers and witnesses, reviewed police body-worn cameras, recordings of the police radio transmissions, and the 911 call; and collected and tested on-scene evidence.”

The 911 caller, a female juvenile, said that Tinsley, her mother’s boyfriend who lived at the apartment, “just shot a gun at her. I don’t know if she’s hurt or not,” and told the dispatcher that a door in the apartment had been broken down.
