Aaron Scott, a resident of Abington Township, was presented a commendation for exceptional service from Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin R. Steele during a recent ceremony in Plymouth Township, The Reporter said.
Scott confronted Khabir Shepard, 27, of New Jersey, who forced his way into Scott’s mother’s Abington home by gunpoint, assaulted her, and attempted to steal her purse in September 2024.
“Due to Mr. Scott’s quick thinking and heroic actions, his mother was not severely harmed and justice was served,” DA Steele said.
Shepard was later sentenced to 10 to 20 years in prison on felony charges of robbery, burglary and person not to possess a firearm in connection with the home invasion robbery in the 1800 block of Horace Avenue.
According to police, Shepard pushed the victim to the ground, at which point she screamed for help from Scott, who was asleep in a rear bedroom. Scott retrieved a legally owned firearm, and, upon seeing Shepard’s firearm, fired two shots.
Shepard was struck in the back and arm and ran to the home’s front lawn where he collapsed. Police soon arrived and took him into custody.
Police said a handgun was recovered from the front of the home and is believed to be the firearm Shepard pointed inside the home. Further investigation revealed that the victim was followed home by Shepard after she exited a local casino.
Subsequent to his arrest, Shepard was taken to a local hospital where he was treated and released. For interviews and police body cam footage from the incident courtesy of FOX29, you can click here.
