Abington senior named SOL Univest Athlete of the Week, 17 selected for PMEA District 11 Band, Choral, and Orchestra Festivals

Olivia Capps, a senior three-sport athlete (swimming, soccer, lacrosse) and Homecoming Queen at Abington Township High School, has been named the Suburban One League Univest Athlete of the Week.

The feature includes her ascent as a member of the swim team, which she hopes will end with postseason accolades, both in individual and relay events.

“Freshman year, it was a little bit rocky,” she said, adding that her progress was a bit impeded by a broken arm and broken ankle in middle school. “It wasn’t my best year. Sophomore year, toward the end of the season, I kind of just evolved. I started getting some of the faster times on the team.”

“As a senior, she exhibited leadership in addition to her skills which helped our team succeed,” Abington’s soccer coach Rick Tompkins said. “We will miss her next year and wish her well in all of her endeavors.”

In related news, the high school’s music department announced that 17 students have been selected to participate in the 2025 Pennsylvania Music Educators Association District 11 Band, Choral, and Orchestra Festivals.

The choral auditions were held November 23 at Upper Merion High School, and the instrumental auditions were held Saturday, December 14 at Upper Dublin High School.

“Our students competed against approximately 700 of their peers to secure a spot in these prestigious festivals, to be held in January and February, 2025,” the district said in a post. “We congratulate these fine musicians!”
