Jefferson Abington surgeon completes 1,500th robotic procedure

Press Release:

Seth Newman, MD, Jefferson Abington Hospital general surgeon, recently completed a milestone 1,500th robotic procedure. He used the technology to perform a ventral hernia repair, one of the most common and fastest-growing robotic general surgery procedures.

It takes many years to achieve this level of accomplishment, and in Dr. Newman’s case it accentuates his extensive experience as a general surgeon. He maintains that, in his specialty, robotic-assisted techniques allow surgeons to perform complex abdominal wall and minimally invasive procedures through smaller incisions — which often means less pain, shorter hospital stays and faster recovery for patients.

Dr. Newman is quick to share the credit with his dedicated team. “This is definitely a whole-team effort, inclusive of my OR, perioperative and central supply colleagues,” he says. “I’m especially grateful to Emily Rixon, RNFA, who has been my bedside OR assistant in nearly all of my robotic operations.”

Jefferson Abington Hospital continues to expand its minimally invasive surgery program, giving more patients in the community access to advanced surgical options close to home. Dr. Newman says he is eager to grow these capabilities and advance innovation in patient care.
