The Abington Board of School Directors voted unanimously to put a $285 million Abington Middle School investment plan on the ballot during the primary election, superintendent Dr. Jeffrey Fecher announced today.
According to his memo, Abington Township and Borough of Rockledge residents will vote on the referendum on Tuesday, May 20. If approved by voters, the referendum would provide funding for construction of a new Middle School.
“The new school would be purposefully designed to meet modern education and student needs, improve accessibility, and foster community and positive school culture,” Dr. Fecher wrote, noting that “The decision is now in the hands of residents in Abington Township and the Borough of Rockledge when they vote at the polls on May 20th.”
Earlier this month, district officials led a presentation titled “Opinions of Abington Residents On Investments In Their Middle School” which included feedback from “500 adults who reflect the demographics of ASD”. The survey was released in December.
“We are grateful to our community for their continued participation in this process. The valuable feedback we received on the proposed options for Abington Middle School helped guide our decision-making process,Dr. Fecher wrote. “The proposed plan meets the needs of our students and staff, reflects our community’s priorities, and provides long-term value.”
The memo continues:
Our community made it clear that they want a voice in this decision that impacts public education and local tax rates. This is why we are once again turning to our community to have a say in this critical investment in the future of our Middle School through a referendum.
OneASDOneFuture.org has been updated and expanded with information on the proposed plan, answers to frequently asked questions, a tax calculator to help residents estimate their individual tax impact, and information on how residents can vote on the referendum. We encourage all residents to explore the website to learn more.
As always, Abington School District Administration, along with the Board of School Directors, remain committed to a collaborative process that reflects the priorities of our community. I also encourage you to continue sharing your input through this Connect Form.
Thank you again for remaining engaged in this process to benefit our students and community.
