Dr. Jeffrey Fecher, superintendent of the Abington School District, asked via letter today for public input on the future of the Abington Middle School.
The letter notes that fixing the 60-year-old middle school is a top priority as the district continues its three-year assessment of school facilities.
“The District created a robust set of criteria to assess Abington Middle School and meet the needs identified by the community, including factors like educational impact, efficiency, enrollment projections, facility and site needs, operations, and financial considerations,” Dr. Fecher wrote. “Guided by these criteria and the feedback of stakeholders and residents, the District developed potential options for the future of the middle school.”
The Abington School Board of Directors reviewed these options at its September 24 meeting.
Options include renovating the current building ($206M – $268M), building a new middle school ($252M – $307M), building two new middle schools serving grades 6-8 ($320M – $497M), or creating two new middle schools, including one building for grades 5-6 and one for grades 7-8 ($365M to $505M).
For more information, you can visit the district’s new options page or review the presentation from the September 24 meeting.
The full presentation is below:
In early 2025, the Board of School Directors will use community input, data from the facilities studies, and evaluation of district resources to recommend a comprehensive plan for the middle school. If the school board approves a plan, the District could propose a plan to voters to help fund it.
The letter offers the following ways to share feedback:
- Attend the October 15 Town Hall and Open House: The District will hold a town hall and open house at the Abington Middle School Little Theater on Tuesday, October 15, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The event will feature a presentation on the options and information stations for residents to ask questions, receive additional information, and share feedback. The presentation will also be streamed live on the Abington School District YouTube channel.
- Use the Connect Form at OneASDOneFuture.org: This dedicated website will continue to serve as an information hub on the facilities planning process and the options to address our middle school. The District encourages residents to share their input and feedback through the Connect Form.
- Subscribe to Receive Updates from the District: District residents can sign up to receive emails on general school district information, including updates on the facilities planning process. To subscribe, visit Abington School District Communications Resources.
