Abington police arrest 18-year-old in connection with shooting incident in Elkins Park

The Abington Township Police Department provided an update today regarding several reports of numerous gunshots and a large group fleeing from the area of the basketball court behind the McKinley Firehouse in Elkins Park on Monday, March 23.

According to the update, an investigation by the Abington Township Police Department led to the shooter being identified as Jamell Whitmore, 18, of King of Prussia. A warrant was obtained for Whitmore’s arrest, and information was shared with the Upper Merion Police Department.

On Thursday, March 26, Whitmore was arrested by the Upper Merion Police Department as he attempted to enter his home, police said. Custody was transferred to the Abington Township Police Department and he was transported to the Montgomery County Correctional Facility.

On Friday, March 27, Whitmore was arraigned and bail was set at $500,000.

The investigation remains active, police said. Residents and businesses in the area are asked to review any surveillance or doorbell camera footage from the time of the incident and contact Detective Liz Cartwright at 267-536-1110 or ecartwright@AbingtonPA.gov if they observed any suspicious activity or relevant information.
