Zoning 101: The Ins, Outs, and Hazards of Municipal Zoning

Did you ever wonder about the whole zoning process? Why does what go where when it comes to development?

On March 28, Amee S. Farrell, the Zoning hearing Board Chair gave a presentation to the Cheltenham Township citizen committees at Glenside Hall. Several of Cheltenham Township’s commissioners were in attendance, along with members Cheltenham Township’s Citizens Committees: Economic Development Task Force, Environmental Advisory Council, Historical Commission, La Mott and Wyncote BHAR’s Commission, Planning Commission, Shade Tree Advisory Commission and the Zoning Hearing Board.

Is zoning even necessary? Yes, there is a body of thought that thinks zoning harms the financial health of the community. You may not agree, but to make an informed decision, you owe it to yourself to consider another viewpoint.

See this link from Strongtowns.org to a story entitled How Zoning Is Holding Your Neighborhood Back. Strong Towns is an international movement that’s dedicated to making communities across the United States and Canada financially strong and resilient.

Below is the presentation that was presented by Ms. Farrell which outlines zoning and the approval process in Cheltenham.
