Uptick in vehicle break-ins and vehicle thefts, Springfield police say

The Springfield Township Police Department announced that there has been an uptick in vehicle break-ins and vehicle thefts in the area in recent weeks.

Police are encouraging residents to take the following precautions:

• Always lock your vehicle, even if it is parked in your driveway.
• Take your key fob with you or keep it securely inside your home. **Never leave your key fob inside your vehicle**, even if the vehicle is locked.
• Remove valuables from your vehicle. Items such as wallets, purses, electronics, bags, loose change, and firearms can attract thieves.
• Park in well-lit areas whenever possible. Motion-activated exterior lighting around your driveway or parking area can also help deter criminal activity.
• Consider installing security cameras or a video doorbell to help monitor your property and provide valuable evidence if a crime occurs.
• Close all windows and ensure all doors are locked before leaving your vehicle, even if you will only be away for a few minutes.

“If you observe suspicious activity in your neighborhood, especially individuals checking vehicle door handles or looking into parked cars, please report it to the Springfield Township Police Department as soon as possible,” the post said. “Your vigilance can help prevent crimes and assist officers in identifying those responsible.”
