Police investigating strong-arm robbery at Cheltenham school bus stop

The Cheltenham Township Police Department announced today the investigation of a strong-arm robbery which took place in the 400 block of Asbury Avenue in Melrose Park on Wednesday, September 25 at approximately 7:45am.

According to police, a juvenile female reported that the occupants of a black Kia sedan approached her while she waited for the school bus on Asbury Avenue. A male occupant of the vehicle called the complainant over to the car, threatened her, and grabbed a cell phone from her hands. The victim was uninjured and the vehicle fled the scene.

An investigation determined that the same vehicle and occupants had approached two other bus stops in the area on Mountain Avenue and Valley Road where similar robberies were attempted.

The suspect vehicle was described as a black four-door sedan with tinted windows, damage to the front bumper area, and an unknown Delaware registration plate. Occupants of the vehicle were described as two black males and one black female in their late teens/early twenties. The female was described as having red or maroon braided hair.

Anyone who can help police identify the suspects, owner of the suspect vehicle, or location of the vehicle is asked to contact Cheltenham police at 215-885-1600 ext. 400. Those with information can also access the “Police Crime Tips” page on the Cheltenham Township website.

Cheltenham Township residents and business owners with exterior cameras who live or work in the areas listed above are asked to check their cameras for any relevant images from 7:00am to 8:00am on the morning of September 25.

Police also ask that if anyone observes suspicious activity or persons approaching students at school bus stops to immediately call 911.
