National Weather Service issues Flash Flood Risk for July 31

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Risk for Friday, July 31 from this afternoon until tonight in greater Glenside and the surrounding region.

“Numerous flash floods are forecast in our region today. Some tips to stay safe from the flooding… have a reliable source to receive any warnings that are issued, and NEVER drive through flooded roads! Most flood related fatalities occur in vehicles,” the agency said in a post.

“Widespread showers and thunderstorms are expected beginning this afternoon into tonight. Storms will be capable of producing excessive rainfall rates in excess of 2” per hour. Rainfall amounts of 1-3” are generally expected, with localized amounts around 5-7” or more possible. This could lead to numerous instances of flash flooding of urbanized and poor drainage areas, small streams, and creeks. flash flooding is possible,” a briefing said.

Showers and thunderstorms likely, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 5pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Temperature falling to around 80 by 5pm. East wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.

Tonight

Showers and thunderstorms before 5am, then showers likely. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Low around 64. Northeast wind around 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between three quarters and one inch possible.

A chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 74. Northeast wind 10 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.
