Pennsylvania is in the midst of a process that will auction off a total of 10 licenses for mini-casinos or satellite casinos, legally known as casinos operating under a Category 4 license.

According to the PA Gambling website, a Category 4 licensed casino is allowed to operate between 300 and 750 slot machines and could could also petition for permission to initially operate up to 30 table games for an additional fee of $2.5 million. After the first year of operating, the casino could add an additional 10 tables games.

The law that created the mini-casinos, provided municipalities the option to prohibit them. This action had to be taken as of December 31, 2017. Approximately 1,000 municipalities throughout the state took the option to opt-out (see the full list).

In the  Glensidelocal.com coverage area, only Cheltenham Township  and Springfield Township opted-out.  To the best of our knowledge, Abington Township and Upper Dublin Townships have not.

It doesn’t make a lot of sense to put a mini-casino in our coverage area while having the Valley Forge Casino Resort near by, but who knows what will happen.
