Summer-like temps expected next week, National Weather Service introduces new ‘Heatrisk’ system

The National Weather Service is predicting summer-like temperatures over the next six days.

According to their forecast, Sunday will see highs in the upper 70s, and Monday through Thursday will linger in the low- to mid-80s. Very little precipitation, if any, is expected, the agency said.

In related news, the National Weather Service and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have presented a new color-coded heat risk system that includes medical risk factors.

NWS HeatRisk, as it’s called, is “an experimental color-numeric-based index that provides a forecast risk of heat-related impacts to occur over a 24-hour period,” according to the NWS’ website.

The agency said that HeatRisk takes into consideration:

  • How unusual the heat is for the time of the year
  • The duration of the heat including both daytime and nighttime temperatures
  • If those temperatures pose an elevated risk of heat-related impacts based on data from the CDC

This index is meant to provide risk guidance for those decision makers and heat-sensitive populations who need to take actions at levels that may be below current NWS heat product levels, the agency said.

The five categories include Green, Yellow, Orange, Red, and, for “extreme” heat, Magenta, which signifies:

This level of rare and/or long-duration extreme heat with little to no overnight relief affects anyone without effective cooling and/or adequate hydration. Impacts likely in most health systems, heat-sensitive industries and infrastructure.

Red is used when a day falls within the top 5% hottest in a particular location for a particular date. When other factors come into play, the alert level may bump to magenta, weather service officials said.

Users can click on a specific day to learn about its heat-related impacts.
