Man who confessed to fatally shooting his wife in Rockledge to stand trial in September

Jose Luna, 59, of Philadelphia, who is charged with the fatal shooting of his wife, 48-year-old Alisett Schubert, in February in Rockledge, will stand trial in September, The Reporter said.

Luna was formally arraigned on the charges on Monday and will remain in the county jail without bail while awaiting trial. His preliminary hearing was held on March 5.

Luna is charged with First-Degree Murder, Third-Degree Murder and Possessing an Instrument of Crime. During an interview with detectives, he admitted to shooting his wife, claiming they had been at a party earlier in the day and that he became angry at her because she “disrespected him in front of others,” The Reporter said.

Detectives say Luna had an extensive criminal history, including arrests for robbery, burglary and grand theft.

Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin R. Steele and Rockledge Borough Police Chief Michael Schmalz previously announced that the incident took place at Huntington Pike and Filmore streets after a SEPTA bus driver used his emergency system to report a shooting and a description of the shooter.

Police found Schubert on the ground suffering from multiple gunshot wounds outside of her vehicle. She was pronounced dead at Abington Hospital, officials said.

According to a SEPTA driver who was driving southbound on Huntington Pike, two or three “pops” were heard before a male, later identified as Luna, exited the front passenger seat of the vehicle, opened the driver’s side door, and walked away. Schubert reportedly fell out of the vehicle.

The driver pulled over and called in the emergency and a description of Luna. Philadelphia police found him one mile away from the scene. As officers approached, Luna reportedly put a gun to his head and pulled the trigger, but the firearm was out of ammunition. He was then arrested without incident, officials said.

The joint investigation by the Montgomery County Detective Bureau and Rockledge police found that the firearm was registered to the victim.
