‘Let’s get ready to rumble!’: Renowned sports announcers & estranged brothers Michael and Bruce Buffer of Abington and Cheltenham

Brian, Michael, and Bruce Buffer have pedigreed careers, roots in Glenside, and an interesting story that united the estranged Michael and Bruce in adulthood.

A little background on Michael, a member of Abington Senior High School’s Class of ’64, and Brian and Bruce, each of whom attended Cheltenham schools, lived on Wistar Drive in Wyncote and moved to Malibu, California in 1972.

Michael was raised by foster parents in Roslyn and was known as Michael Huber during his time at Abington Senior High School. He went on to become a renowned announcer for professional boxing, wrestling, and other major sporting events including the NBA and NHL championship finals. A former daytime soap opera television star, Michael has trademarked the five words, “Let’s get ready to rumble!”

Bruce is the official ring announcer for all Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) events. On UFC broadcasts, he is introduced as the “Veteran Voice of the Octagon” and has a catchphrase of his own: “IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT’S… TIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIME.” The phrase has become synonymous with the UFC’s main event.

In 1989, the brothers were introduced when their birth father contacted Michael after seeing him on television. By the mid-90s, Bruce had become Michael’s agent and manager. The pair have since worked together to form a company, The Buffer Partnership, via licensing and appearances, and made millions between them.

Brian, who played football at CHS, is now a retired California police officer. For more on Michael and Bruce’s late-life introduction and partnership, you can read ESPN’s article here. You can also watch this Youtube video:
