In January of 1969, the unbeaten Cheltenham High School boys’ basketball team edged Norristown High School in overtime by a score of 57-55.
According to local historian Chuck Langerman, the game featured two of the top high school boys’ basketball teams in southeastern Pennsylvania at the time and was played before a standing-room-only crowd in Wyncote.
Junior Lorrie Slade scored 21 points and All-American senior Craig Littlepage (above left) added 19 points to lead the Panthers in the Suburban One League showdown. With 7 seconds remaining in overtime, Slade was fouled and converted both free throws to clinch the victory.
The late Henry Williams, Norristown High’s 6’5″ sophomore, led all scorers with 29 points. Williams went on to play for the now-defunct American Basketball Association’s (ABA) Utah Stars in 1974-75. The photo above features Williams shooting with ABA/NBA legend Julius “Dr. J” Erving looking on.
