Cheltenham grad and Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson was a pitcher on the Panther baseball team in addition to playing the outfield.
According to local historian Chuck Langerman, Jackson had an electric arm with amazing velocity, but at times experienced problems with control. During the 1964 season, the future “Mr. October” had the best and worst pitching performances of his high school career.
His best was a no-hitter against Norristown High, during which the left-hander struck out 15 batters, including six of the last eight.
His worst was a 3-2 eight-inning loss to the undefeated Abington High School. Jackson struck out 16 and only gave up one hit, but walked an uncharacteristic 14 batters, hitting two, and was credited with three wild pitches.
