Abington residents, Afghani refugees run a commercial pastry kitchen with catering services in Jenkintown

Somayeh and Reza Hasani, Meadowbrook residents and Afghani refugees, launched a commercial pastry kitchen called SRNAH Family Kitchen in Jenkintown this past November.

The Hasanis arrived in Abington Township in November 2024 after a three-year stint in Lyon, France. They were forced to leave their home in Afghanistan in August 2021 when the Taliban took control.

“SRNAH” is an acronym of all my family member’s first names. Its impetus is to help Somayeh and Reza support their three young children, ages 5, 12, and 15.

“Somayeh took part in some trainings for restaurants while we were in France. We had an idea to mix Middle Eastern food with a French-style presentation,” Reza told Glenside Local. “That’s where the kitchen got its start.”

In late 2024, Somayeh started working as a pastry chef at Curds N Whey in Jenkintown. Six months later, she began working part-time at Weinrich’s Bakery in Willow Grove, a role she still holds today.

“She’s also running our family business. We’re helping her as best we can,” he said. “The idea is to put all the energy as a team and earn more money for our life costs. We want to keep our kids in the Abington School District, which is a great school. It’s an investment for our kids’ futures.”

SRNAH distributes twice a week from the Hasanis home, with a potential storefront in its future. The family also offers catering services as well, with a focus on high-quality Middle Eastern food. Reza said their target customers are “food lovers who want to try different foods.”

He noted that the Abington community has been helpful as his family charts its ever-changing course.

“We’ve created a good network with local churches. Abington is a great neighborhood. People are very kind here, and our kids have a good future,” he said. “We have a good attitude about life here. We’re moving forward as best we can.”
