Glenside’s air quality index jumps to ‘Hazardous’, Cheltenham postpones graduation

The tool’s suggestions read:

Everyone should stay indoors and reduce activity levels.

Stay tuned to local news media for advisories.

As a result, Cheltenham School District Superintendent Dr. Brian Scriven announced today that the high school’s commencement ceremony scheduled for Thursday will be held on Friday at 9:30am.

From his announcement:

Dear Cheltenham Community –

According to data from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and Philadelphia Air Management Services, Montgomery County air quality is hazardous, sitting in the purple with a reading of 367. As a result of us being in hazardous conditions, we have decided to postpone today’s commencement ceremony to Friday at 9:30 a.m., provided conditions are more favorable.

We are optimistic the air quality numbers will drop in the next 24 hours. Friday’s prediction looks more favorable, with Montgomery County forecast to be in the moderate level (yellow).

Postponing graduation is a tough decision which I know will inconvenience many of you, but as always, the safety of our community must come first. Thank you for your understanding as we navigate this environmental crisis.

Best,

Dr. Brian W. Scriven
Superintendent of Schools
