Giant Food and The GIANT Company have decided to close their centralized fulfillment center at 315 York Road in Willow Grove (Upper Moreland Township), according to a press release.
A fulfillment center is a logistics facility that stores, processes, packs, and ships products for businesses. Note that the GIANT grocery store is not closing.
The number of workers who will be laid off was not mentioned in the release.
In addition to the Willow Grove facility, the GIANT Company will close four other fulfillment centers, also known as “warerooms”, in Pennsylvania: the Island Avenue facility in Philadelphia, along with facilities in Coopersburg, North Coventry and Lancaster. Most of the closures will take place in early 2026.
According to Ahold Delhaize USA, a U.S. subsidiary of the Dutch supermarket conglomerate, the company decided to close these facilities after considering customer trends and preferences for home delivery that increasingly include fast delivery and wider assortment and delivery availability.
“The difficult decisions to close these facilities were made after carefully considering customer trends and preferences for home delivery, where customers are increasingly expecting fast delivery, more assortment and delivery availability to meet their preferences,” the press release said.
Ahold Delhaize USA will take an estimated non-cash impairment charge of $35 million for the closures of the five Giant Company facilities and an estimated non-cash impairment charge of $15 million for the closure of the Giant Food facility.
