The Jenkintown Police Department provided additional details regarding the fire at 603/605 West Avenue on the morning of Monday, March 9.
According to a press release, the Jenkintown Fire Department and the Jenkintown Police Department were dispatched at 7:00am for a fire alarm activation. The occupants of the second-floor apartments at 605 West Avenue reported that there was a fire in the apartment next door.
Arriving units found fire and smoke coming from the second-floor’s front and side. Crews quickly extinguished the fire in the 603 apartment, which suffered “extensive damage”. The 605 apartment suffered smoke and water damage, along with the businesses (Breslin’s Consignment Corner and David Arnold Hair Salon) on the first floor.
Breslin’s Consignment Corner said that the store will be closed “for a few days”.
The Red Cross responded and is assisting the residents with possible lodging and recovery, officials said.
Responding units also rescued a cat, which was resuscitated at the scene by Second Alarmers Rescue Squad personnel. The cat was transported by the owner to a local veterinarian for treatment. Another cat perished in the fire, officials said.
Mutual aid was provided by the Abington Fire Company, Edge Hill Fire Company, McKinley Fire Company, Rockledge Fire Company, and Weldon Fire Company.
The fire is still under investigation by the Jenkintown Fire Marshal.
