Flourtown Fire Company’s 4th generation female firefighter highlighted by CBS News

Lexi Wilmot-Shaw, a fourth-generation volunteer firefighter with the Flourtown Fire Company, was featured today by CBS News for playing a crucial role in bringing the SPS Technologies fire under control.

“We were involved in dropping a lot of lines for water and helping with the supply,” Wilmot-Shaw, whose father serves as Flourtown’s chief, said.

The story highlights a growing number of female firefighters, both locally and across the country.

“I’ve been doing this for 13 years now, and when I joined, there weren’t too many women, but now it’s more and more,” she said. “I met many of my bridesmaids through the fire academy; some of my best friends are firefighters.”

“There’s no reason that women cannot get involved in the fire service,” George Wilmot said. “They’re accepted just like anyone else.”
