Roughly 1,000 Family Dollar and Dollar Tree stores will close over the next few years, their parent company announced last week.
The stores experienced a significant underperformance in 2023, according to the press release by the company, and Family Dollar, which is owned by Dollar Tree, was recently fined more than $40 million for a rat infestation at a warehouse that forced hundreds of stores to temporarily close, 6ABC Philadelphia reported.
“As a result of this review, we plan on closing approximately 600 Family Dollar stores in the first half of fiscal 2024. Additionally, approximately 370 Family Dollar and 30 Dollar Tree stores will close over the next several years at the end of each store’s current lease term,” the company said in the press release.
Dollar Tree has not revealed when the store closures are set to begin or what states will be affected by the decision, though locations in our area may survive the cutbacks.
“As far as I know we’re still one of the survivors,” a Dollar Tree employee at the 323 Old York Road location in Jenkintown told us.
A Dollar Tree employee at the 1841 Bethlehem Pike location in Flourtown said the same.
After several attempts, we were unable to make contact with the Family Dollar at 929 Easton Road, Abington or the Dollar Tree at 1000 Easton Road in Wyncote. If you know something we don’t, please feel free to post updates in the comments.
