Cheltenham’s Sowell sets new state record, sophomore Nesmith upsets 3x state champ to take PIAA Class 3A 100-meter title

Jordan Sowell, a senior member of Cheltenham High School’s track & field team, set a new Pennsylvania record Friday morning at Shippensburg University’s Grace Stadium.

Sowell’s performance took gold in the PIAA State Triple Jump with a leap of 50-6. The previous state record was 50-5, set by Methacton High’s Carlton Lavong in 2010.

He won the competition by more than two feet. The standings from the event are below:

He recorded a personal-best mark of 51 feet, 1 inch in January to become the United States’ best in the triple jump. In April, he announced his decision to continue his academic and athletic career at Clemson University in South Carolina.

In related news, Cheltenham sophomore Amirah Nesmith upset three-time state champion Laila Campbell to take home the PIAA Class 3A 100-meter title on Saturday at the same event.

Nesmith ran 11.84 and Campbell finished less than a step behind at 11.87.
