An informal group of Cheltenham Township residents recently submitted a policy request to the township’s Board of Commissioners which calls for the prohibition of Cheltenham police from assisting ICE unless legally required to do so, WHYY reported today.
According to their coverage, the policy also “restricts information-sharing with immigration enforcement”
and “encourages outreach to immigrant communities through multilingual communication.”
“We want anybody who enters Cheltenham for whatever reason to be granted dignity and respect and to be protected,” co-author Judy Heath of Glenside told WHYY. “This is not out of nothing. This is out of what we’re seeing across the country — people just being ripped out of homes.”
Commissioner Matthew Areman said the township plans to introduce a policy, a set of procedures or a statement in October, WHYY said.
