Abington police share details of recent vehicle theft/theft from vehicle trend targeting high-performance Dodge/Jeep models

The Abington Township Police Department shared today the details of a recent crime trend involving thefts from vehicles and thefts of vehicles in our region.

According to the department, criminals are likely targeting Dodge Challengers, Chargers, Durangos and Jeep Grand Cherokees, specifically the “SRT” and “Hellcat” editions, each of which are often started sans key fob and reprogrammed using aftermarket electronic products.

Thefts from vehicles are mostly taking place during the early morning hours. Thieves “appear to be checking neighborhoods for unlocked vehicles and removing credit cards, purses, tools or electronics left inside,” the department said. “In several cases, the vehicle’s key fob was left inside, which allowed the actors to steal the vehicle itself.”

Police encourage residents to remove valuables from their parked vehicles and to ensure their vehicles are locked at all times. Owners of high-performance Dodge vehicles are encouraged to park their vehicle in a garage, if possible, box the vehicle in with another vehicle, use a steering wheel immobilization device and/or other vehicle immobilization technology.

Abington police said they have increased patrols and are working with other departments to identify and arrest the actors involved. If you have any information regarding these crimes or witness anything suspicious, please dial 911.

The department would like to remind all residents of the following:

  • Always lock your vehicle, even when it’s parked in your driveway or garage.
  • Always take your keys or fob with you.
  • Never leave wallets, purses, or other valuables in your vehicle.
  • Never leave your car running while unattended or unlocked.
