Jenkintown School District to discuss the potential acquisition of adjacent low-income apartment building on Oct. 12

The Jenkintown School District announced that a public meeting to discuss the potential acquisition of land currently occupied by Salba Apartments, located at 309 Walnut Street, will be held on Monday, October 12 at 7:00pm in the high school auditorium.

A public presentation regarding the potential expansion of the district’s facilities via the Salba property was first held in November. 2024. In December, the district issued a letter which stated that the Reverend Marshall Mitchell, Pastor of Salem Baptist Church, believes that the 51-year-old building is “nearing the end of its useful life and would like to give Jenkintown first consideration for land use.”

The letter said the acquisition could come through a purchase or a long-term rental agreement. Current tenants of the low-income housing apartments will be ensured “affordable housing solutions,” the letter said.

Later that month, the district announced that it had entered into a partnership with Godshall Kane O’Rourke Architects, LLC (GKO Architects) of Ambler to move forward with a possible facilities expansion.

According to HumanGood.org, which manages the property, Salba Apartments serves low-income adults ages 18 and older and includes 17 one- and two-bedroom units.
