Jenkintown School District exploring acquisition of adjacent low-income apartment building, meeting to be held Dec 2

The Jenkintown School District announced today that a public presentation regarding a potential expansion of the district’s facilities will be held on Monday, December 2 at 5:30pm.

According to the notice, the district is looking to acquire land currently occupied by Salba Apartments, located at 309 Walnut Street. According to HumanGood.org, which manages the property, Salba Apartments serves low-income adults ages 18 and older and includes 17 one- and two-bedroom units.

“It is important to note that no decisions have been made, or will be made, without significant community discussion and input,” superintendent Dr. Jill Takacs wrote. “We have begun exploring several financial options, including donations and/or grants, that could potentially allow the district to purchase or lease the property to address our needs.”

The letter additionally notes that the December 2 meeting will be the first of several meetings regarding the potential acquisition.
