The 7th graders at Jenkintown are running a fundraiser for girls’ education and Afghan refugees.
The 7th graders at Jenkintown MS/HS read a book called called The Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis about a girl from Afghanistan who has to make herself look like a boy so she can earn money. They also watched a series called Girl Rising about tales of heroic young girls who have faced sexism, abuse, and a lack of education. Those stories inspired them to donate to the foundation HIAS.
HIAS supports low-income immigrants of all backgrounds as they build new lives in the community. Through immigration legal services and an array of social services, they work to address their needs, defend their rights, and advocate for their equitable inclusion in American society.
