Willow Grove Park Mall evacuated due to ‘smoke conditions’ from an outside fire, officials on scene

This incident was safely contained thanks to early coordination and highlights why firefighting is always a team effort. It’s also a great example of how the countywide box system works for working fire dispatches- while the response may sound extensive to some, having the right resources early is what helps prevent situations from becoming more serious.

The Abington Township Fire Company said at approximately 3:30pm that “the fire was contained to the compactor, the mall is now fully open, and the cause of the fire is under investigation by the Abington Township Fire Marshal’s Office.”

The Abington Township Police Department announced that the Willow Grove Park Mall has been evacuated due to smoke conditions in the building from an outside fire.

Police said the fire has been extinguished, and that the fire department is still on scene venting the building.

Abington police are also on scene assisting with the situation and encourage area residents to avoid the area until it is cleared.

Emergency Alerts of Southeastern Pennsylvania posted at approximately 12:30pm that a working fire was taking place at the Bloomingdales department store.

The post also said “SECURITY CALLING IN TRASH COMPACTOR FIRE ON SIDE OF STORE”.
