Mr. Thomas Moore, former Roslyn resident, Navy veteran, and multi-sport Hall of Fame coach, has passed away at 82

Mr. Thomas M. Moore, a former Roslyn resident, United States Navy veteran, and multi-sport Hall of Fame coach, passed away on Monday, March 30. He was 82.

Following his graduation from Roman Catholic High School in 1961, Mr. Moore served with the Navy from 1961 to 1964, after which he began a successful career in electronics with Narco Avionics in Fort Washington, his obituary said. Prior to his retirement in 2012, he attended night school and earned his college degree from La Salle University.

Mr. Moore coached baseball with the Roslyn Boys Club from 1973 to 1978 and created the St. John’s Intramural Basketball Program, his obituary said. He also coached CYO football at St. John of the Cross (Abington Township) from 1967 to 1982 and played an instrumental role in launching the annual CYO All-Star Football Game.

In 1988, he began coaching basketball at St. Alphonsus in Maple Glen. His 14-year tenure included multiple Region 11 championships and consistent appearances in the Archdiocesan playoffs, including a Final Four appearance in 2003.

Beyond coaching, Mr. Moore served the CYO community as Commissioner of Region 11 for many years, retiring in 2001, his obituary said.

“Tom was a coach, teacher, and mentor to hundreds of young men and women over the years. He remained in close contact with many of his former players and fellow coaches, cherishing those lifelong relationships,” his obituary said. “Nothing brought Tom more joy than running into a former player and hearing the words, ‘Hi Coach.'”

In 2021, Mr. Moore was inducted into the Montgomery County Coaches Hall of Fame.

From The Big Doc Memorial Classic’s Facebook post:

Coach Moore was a beloved member of the St. John of the Cross, St. Alphonsus, and Bishop McDevitt communities for more than 50 years. He coached CYO football and basketball, spanning several decades, and developed many great student-athletes that would later compete for the Bishop McDevitt Lancers, including his five children—Mike, Tommy, Terrie, Danny, and Nancy to whom we also extend our love. Although he was a graduate of Roman Catholic High School, he was an ardent supporter and fan of all Bishop McDevitt sports and student-athletes. Following his coaching career, he continued to influence and “coach” his former players, assistant coaches, colleagues, and friends and enlisted their help in many charitable endeavors to assist the underserved and most vulnerable in our communities. “Coach” never stopped teaching and coaching. We hope that his legacy and continuing impact and influence on all of us who were fortunate to be part of his circle will bring many happy memories, comfort, and peace to his family and friends during this difficult time. Rest in Peace Coach after a job well done.
