Walgreens in Elkins Park appears on list of nationwide shutdowns, management says otherwise

MSN.com reported in July 2024 that the Walgreens at 1 Yorktown Plaza in Elkins Park will be closing as part of the pharmacy store chain’s planned shutdowns for underperforming branches across the country.

Usearch.com also lists the location under its “closing in Pennsylvania” header. The Yorktown Plaza store appeared on the list of 1200 planned closures and is on the list of 500 closures scheduled for 2025.

Cheltenham Township has not received word one way or another. Because the building is privately owned, building and zoning director Henry Sekawungu noted that the township does not have control over tenants and their replacements.

A store manager told Glenside Local in March that the listing is false.

“It’s a rumor, regardless of what any lists say,” the manager said. “Anything you hear to the contrary isn’t accurate.”

“That’s been said for about the last year. There’s no truth to that fact,” Jason Abrams of Abrams Realty & Development, which manages the property, told Glenside Local on Wednesday, April 2.

The chain’s website has a dedicated closures page which includes assistance for customers, but does not provide a list of which locations are staying open.

Walgreens CEO Tim Wentworth said last year that the wave of closures is due to ongoing challenges with profitability and declining margins.

“We continue to face a difficult operating environment, including persistent pressures on the U.S. consumer and the impact of recent marketplace dynamics which have eroded pharmacy margins,” Wentworth said. “Our results and outlook reflect these headwinds.”

Other Walgreens locations in greater Glenside exist at 2727 W Cheltenham Avenue in Wyncote and at 1456 Bethlehem Pike in Flourtown.
