Veteran honored by William Penn NSDAR Chapter with Quilt of Valor

At an event held on May 2 at the Upper Moreland Library Community Room, members of the William Penn Chapter National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution, (NSDAR) presented a handmade Quilt of Valor to Robert Gordon, Philadelphia, PA.

Gordon served in the U.S. Navy from 1989 to 1999.  After that, he joined the Army in 1999 and retired as Sergent First Class after 25 years of service. He served in Bosnia, Afghanistan where he served in Operation Iraqi Freedom, Honduras, and was stationed at Fort Hood and Fort Bliss.  In addition, from 2005-2010 he was assigned to the Army parachute team, the Golden Knights, traveling and performing in multiple airshows.

During the event, Robert spoke to the attendees about his time in the service and shared numerous photos.

The quilts were made through a collaboration of the William Penn Chapter and the Great Valley Chapter of the NSDAR. The William Penn chapter members who worked on the quilts included Sue Singer (prepared quilt top) and Cynthia Ross (bound quilt).  Kathleen Conway, from Great Valley Chapter NSDAR, handled quilting, batting and backing.

Quilt of Valor (QOV) is a quality, handmade quilt that is machine or hand quilted. It is awarded to a Service Member or Veteran who has been touched by war.  “Today and every day, we honor and thank our service members and veterans for their dedication and sacrifice in defending our freedom. We also salute their families, recognizing the strength and support they provide” stated Sue Singer.  The Quilts of Valor Program has donated more than 400,000 quilts to service members worldwide. Each veteran is also given a certificate.
