Upper Moreland police warn of ongoing PECO scam

The Upper Moreland Township Police Department forwarded a message on behalf of PECO which alerts customers to an ongoing scam.

According to the message, the scam uses “sophisticated tactics to pocket quick cash” through PECO’s recent system upgrades which allow scammers “to manipulate and confuse customers into making immediate payments.”

“Even with our system changes, our termination and shutoff processes have not changed. These scammers are contacting PECO customers and falsely claiming their electric or natural gas service will be disconnected unless payment is made immediately,” the message reads.

PECO additionally advised customers to withhold account or billing information from unverified personnel. If a suspicious phone call, text message, and/or email is received, or if someone claiming to be from PECO has come to your home for an unscheduled visit, you can call PECO at 800-494-4000.

“PECO will NEVER DEMAND IMMEDIATE PAYMENT, nor will we ever require one specific form of payment, such as a prepaid card, bitcoin, or third-party digital money transfers,” the message said.

The rest of the message is as follows:
