Local historian Chuck Langerman has highlighted the current professional statuses of three Cheltenham alumni:
Madeleine August (above left)
August, a 2017 graduate Madeleine, is an architectural designer and researcher who has been awarded a prestigious Fulbright research grant to study in Sri Lanka in South Asia.
August will be researching Ambalamas, which are traditional structures built by communities across Sri Lanka to offer spaces for travelers, pilgrims and traders to rest. Ambalamas were constructed centuries ago in Sri Lanka before inns and hotels existed and were built without charge as an act of goodwill.
August graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelor’s of Architecture degree with a concentration in Architecture, Culture, and Society and a Minor in Inequality Studies. The Elkins Park native was awarded the Alpha Rho Chi Medal at Cornell University for excellence in leadership, service and professional merit.
Larry Altman (above middle)
Altman, a 1979 graduate, is a retired marketing executive turned volunteer.
These days, Altman spends his time giving back to the greater Philadelphia area through non-profit organizations, including Meals on Wheels, the Elmwood Park Zoo, the Mitzvah Circle Foundation, and the Lower Gwynedd Township Parks and Recreation Board.
Altman is a 1983 graduate of Hamilton College in New York where he majored in Economics. At Cheltenham High, he played forward on the varsity basketball team and end on the Panther football team. His older sister, Andrea Altman, is a 1975 graduate of Cheltenham High School.
Robert Paul (above right)
Paul, a 1968 graduate, is, a former musician, music teacher and assistant principal at the Haddonfield (New Jersey) School District, which has long been recognized as one of the top school districts in the state of New Jersey.
When Paul was working in New York City in the 1970s as a musician, he wrote a book (above) for legendary drummer Buddy Rich titled “Buddy Rich Today: Drum Set Studies in Four Parts”. Long out of print and unavailable, the book has now been re-released from Hudson Music.
Paul earned his B.A. in music education from Temple University and his master’s in education from Arcadia University in Glenside.
