Asiyah S. Mowatt-Mays, 19, was sentenced to 11.5 to 23 months in prison for causing a crash in July 2024 that killed a 15-year-old passenger and injured another, The Reporter said.

Officials said the crash occurred at approximately 5:00am at the intersection of Stenton and Evergreen Avenues in the Wyndmoor section of Springfield Township. Springfield police arrived to find a white 2004 Infiniti and a red 2020 Hyundai resting on their sides and severely damaged.

A 15-year-old male, unconscious and lying on the sidewalk, was pronounced dead at the scene. A 14-year-old male was found unconscious, severely injured, and outside of the vehicle. The defendant was found outside of the Hyundai and suffering from extensive injuries to her face and eye.

An investigation by Springfield Police and the Montgomery County Detective Bureau found that the Hyundai had been reported stolen from nearby Chestnut Hill on July 27.

Mowatt-Mays pleaded guilty to charges of homicide by vehicle, aggravated assault by vehicle and receiving stolen property. She also pleaded guilty to receiving stolen property in connection with a separate June 22, 2024, incident during which she was found operating a stolen vehicle at Old York and Old Welsh roads in Abington Township, The Reporter said.

In January, she was denied her application for admittance to Montgomery County’s behavioral health court.

Authorities said she caused the crash while she was speeding, driving without a license, and ignoring a red traffic signal.
