18-year-old woman accused of driving stolen car, causing fatal Wyndmoor crash loses bid for special treatment court

Asiyah Sara Mowatt-Mays, 18, was denied her application for admittance to Montgomery County’s behavioral health court after being accused of speeding and operating a stolen car and causing a crash that killed a 15-year-old and injured two others in the Wyndmoor section of Springfield Township in July 2024, Mainline Media News reported.

She faces a January 24 pretrial conference and faces charges of homicide by vehicle, aggravated assault by vehicle, reckless driving, speeding, unauthorized use of a vehicle and receiving stolen property.

The two-vehicle fatal crash took place July 29 at the intersection of Stenton and Evergreen avenues in Springfield Township and involved a 2020 Hyundai Elantra operated by Mowatt-Mays, which had been reported stolen two days earlier by a Chestnut Hill woman, and a 2014 Infiniti.

A 15-year-old male in the car operated by Mowatt-Mays was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. A 14-year-old male was also ejected from the vehicle and was treated for severe injuries. Neither were wearing seatbelts, Mainline Media said.

The driver of the Infiniti had to be extricated and was treated for serious injuries, court documents indicate.

According to the story, most offenders admitted to behavioral health court “are accused of non-violent offenses and receive treatment for behavioral health issues that may have contributed to their criminal behaviors. Participants who successfully complete the program can have certain felony charges reduced to misdemeanors or misdemeanor charges dismissed. Such determinations are made on a case-by-case assessment of a person’s prior record and the nature of the crime.”

Mowatt-Mays remains in the county jail while awaiting trial.
