Summer Fun Guide for the Kids

There are those parents who registered  the children  for summer camp/activities months ago, and there are those parents who are scrambling to find summer activities for their kids now that school is out.  Finding activities for teens can be challenging, so you have waited until the last minute.

This is Glenside Local’s Last Minute Summer Fun guide to for Abington and Cheltenham educational, traditional, art and community camps plus summer programs at playgrounds and libraries.

Educational Weekly                                         

Most of these camps offer one or several week sessions

Pennstate Abington July 25th to August 10th, 9 am to 4 pm, Grades 3rd grade to 12th. Offers students a fun-filled approach to academic learning during the summer months, Camps on coding, math, robotics. Limited availability, but there are still spots left.

Camp Invention at Copper Beech Elementary July 16 to  July 20, Grades kindergarten through 6th grade. A program of the National Inventors Hall of Fame®, Camp Invention is an exciting, week-long summer adventure with lessons that explore connections between science, technology, engineering, and innovation.

Cheltenham Cop Camp July 25 to July 27, Ages 10 to 12, at Curtis Arboretum. The objective of Cheltenham Cop Camp is to encourage better understanding between Police andarea youth. Cop Camp Cadets are taught teamwork, lessons in personal safety, respect for themselves and respect for others, as they participate in exciting well-organized police activities. The result is camaraderie and lasting friendships with local Police Officers.

Voyage Program —  July 9 – July 13; July 16 – July 20; July 23 – July 27, Grades 2nd through 7th graders.  This summer program at Glenside Elementary is an exploration on the theme “Innovating through Engineering.” Pennsylvania-certified teachers will lead students through a project-based learning model, exercising their curiosity, creativity, collaboration and critical-thinking skills to create, invent and innovate.

Arts & Nature (full and half day)

Abington Arts Center — Camp runs from June 18 to August 14, Ages 4 to 24 offering 3 hour days focused on art and creativity.

Allens Lane Art Center June 18 to August 7th , full day, ages 5 – 12 and a special program just for 13 year-olds. Each week campers spend time in our art studios, dance studios and theater as they learn from our team of well qualified professionals as well as spend time outside enjoying our open fields, playgrounds, tennis and basketball court

Briar Bush Nature Center Summer Camps –June 4 to August 31, Ages 4 to 15 and 24 months to 3 with an adult offering morning and afternoon sessions. Gives children the opportunity to experience the wonders of nature through scientific discovery, hikes, crafts, live animal encounters, games, and playtime.

Cheltenham Center for the Arts :Summer Art CampJune 18 to August 24 ( 2 week sessions) is specially designed for children ages 5-12 TEEN SUMMER STUDIOS are for ages 13-17, who enjoy activities in the visual and performing arts. Our programs give children the chance to develop creative skills for self-expression.

Traditional Full Day Camps

Abington Club June 18 to August 31, Ages 3 to 12, ten week summer day camp program in the heart of Jenkintown, PA

Abington Friends — Camp runs from June 26 to August 17,  Ages 3 to 15 Offers camps with music, drama, games, swimming.

Ardsley Day Care — June 18 to August 24th, ages of 6 to 13 years of age with camp hours of 7 am to 6 pm. Located at the Ardsley Community Center

Burn Brae Day Camp for CreativityJune 18 to August 31st, Ages 3 to 15. Program built  through the exploration of arts, technology, science, and physical activities. Our campers soar to their individual heights, build confidence and new skills with exposure to a wide variety of activities in a welcoming and encouraging environment.

Camp Anglewood –-June 18 to August 24,  ages 4 to 12. Anglewood has provided a classic summer camping experience for children since 1952. The camp facilities are located on Rock Lane in Elkins Park

Future Stars  at LaSalle High school– June 18 to August 17th, Ages 4 to 13. Camps offers full-day, air-conditioned facilities, swimming twice a day, playing fields, and state of the art technology. Future Stars Camps provide sports, arts & crafts, science, theater in an environment that nurtures growth through individual initiative, group challenges, sportsmanship, and fun!

Community Camps

Summer Playground Program (Abington Township) June 26  to August 4 Ages: 6 -12 yrs old. Held at both Penbryn or Crestmont Parks. 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Summer Playground Program (Cheltenham Township) June 25 to August, 16, Ages 6 to 12, Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM – 3:30 PM. The eight-week Summer Playground Program offers supervised arts & crafts, special events, inter-playground competitions, field trips and “theme” activities for youngsters ages 6 to 12. (*Or have completed Kindergarten. Certificate of Kindergarten completion from school required for children under the age of 6.*)
