Segment of Susquehanna Rd in Abington to close from Sept 3 – 9 for SEPTA rail improvements

PennDOT announced that SEPTA will be performing rail improvements on Susquehanna Road in Abington Township beginning Tuesday, September 3 until Monday, September 9.

Crews will be working from 9:00am until 8:00pm. Susquehanna Road between Grovania Avenue and Bradfield Road is scheduled to be closed and detoured. During the closure, motorists will be directed to use Edge Hill Road, Easton Road, Jenkintown Road, and Fitzwatertown Road, PennDOT said.

Abington School District superintendent Dr. Jeffrey Fecher shared the following memo to the community today:

As this is one of the busiest intersections in our Township, coupled with the typical elevated levels of traffic that can be expected during the first week of school, we anticipate that this closure will create significant delays for our school community traveling to and from most of our school buildings.

With 85 percent of our bus routes also traveling through this intersection during any point on a typical school day, please be advised that we expect transportation delays as well. Should a bus be more than 20 minutes behind schedule, we will send alerts as soon as possible to parents/guardians via email notifying them of such a delay.

SEPTA is only permitted to divert traffic to state-owned roads, which means that detour signs will direct drivers on Susquehanna Rd. to instead use Jenkintown Rd. for travel between Fitzwatertown and Easton roads. However, please be aware that local roads, such as Bradfield Rd., will remain OPEN during this time, and will be accessible to get around the closure. If you are commuting to one of our school buildings during this closure, please plan to build in extra travel time.
