Mr. Gary Lee Kochersperger, a resident of Hatboro and Abington and a longtime teacher, coach, and athletic director at Upper Moreland High School, passed away on Friday, January 10 at home with family. He was 80 years old.
Mr. Kochersperger graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi as a scholarship basketball athlete. After serving in the US Army, he was invited to try out for the New York Knicks in 1969, his obituary said.
After earning his teaching degree from Temple University, he devoted 35 years to Upper Moreland High School as a teacher, basketball coach and athletic director.
From his obituary:
Coach “K” truly loved his students, his athletes, and the faculty he worked with. It was not uncommon for Gary to stay in touch with his former players and students long after they graduated. In his free time, Gary was heavily involved as chairperson of PIAA District 1 basketball and volleyball. This role further allowed him to keep in touch with many old and new friends. He also dedicated countless hours to Coaches vs. Cancer and was awarded the Charles Dinsmore Award in 2012 for his commitment to the fight against cancer.
Friends and family are invited to attend his visitation on Saturday, January 25 from 10:00am to 11:00am, followed by a Celebration of Life memorial service at 11:00am. Services will be held at Abington Presbyterian Church, 1082 Old York Road. Interment private burial will be held at Hillside Cemetery.
