Recap of Glenside’s 120th 4th of July parade: record spectatorship and a Woody sighting

Abington Police & Emergency Management has estimated that Greater Glenside Patriotic Association’s 120th annual 4th of July parade and fireworks show each drew spectator turnouts of 20,000+, the most of any year on record.

“With an entertainment background in producing family-friendly shows and securing those kinds of attractions since 1968, we always feel spectators’ reactions must be considered in pre-event planning & acquisitions,” Bill Hall, GGPA parade/fireworks coordinator, said. “After 26 years of GGPA volunteerism, we feel our all-volunteer celebration team knows the drill and what’s expected of them to provide Glenside with its top patriotic entertainment of the year.”

The day’s annual operating cost is approaching $70,000—$15,000 to fireworks and $50,000 to the parade.

“Lots of people don’t realize bands and marching units get paid. They don’t come for free,” Hall said. “We believe it can be proudly and factually stated: ‘Glenside: your July 4th patriotic capital of the east and beyond!’ Public reaction has been most positive, and that in itself is rewarding and reassuring to GGPAers whose year-long efforts came to fruition.”

The GGPA and other community entities captured the day in photos, some of which are included below.
