Police searching for driver of fatal hit-and-run on Ogontz Avenue

Police are searching for the driver in a deadly hit-and-run that occurred around 11:00pm at 7900 Ogontz Avenue Tuesday night.

Toby Maurice Bryant, 47, from the 1500 block of McKinley Street, was hit by a silver Ford sedan that was heading north on Ogontz Avenue. He was pronounced dead at 11:18pm.

Family members say Bryant was heading to pick up dinner after leaving work at Golden Combs Barber Shop. He had worked there for more than 15 years.

Surveillance footage showed Bryant’s body being dragged by the vehicle for 30 to 40 feet, police said. He was reportedly struck so hard “he was knocked out of his footwear,” Chief Inspector Scott Small said.

A witness said the driver, described as a black man with a stocky build who was wearing dark clothing, checked the damage after getting out of the vehicle, then drove off on Cheltenham Avenue.

The vehicle reportedly has dark tinted windows and may have damage to the hood and front windshield.

The preliminary investigation revealed that unit #1 (Silver colored sedan) was traveling north on the 7900 block of Ogontz Avenue at which point unit # 2 (pedestrian a 46-year-old-male) was crossing against the light and not in the crosswalk when unit #1 struck the pedestrian. Per witness at the scene, unit #1 stopped briefly and the driver of unit #1 exited his vehicle checked the damage of his car then fled and was last seen north on the 8000 block of the Ogontz Avenue. A vehicle part with a Ford emblem was recovered at the scene. Suspect Description: Black male, stocky build wearing dark clothing. Vehicle Description: Silver colored Ford sedan, dark tinted windows and likely has moderate to heavy damage to the hood and front windshield.
