Pet of the Week: Meet Brutus

Some dog rescues are more harrowing than others. Case in point: Brutus.

Brutus was found tied to a pole in the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia by Tony “The Barber”. You’ll find Tony cutting hair at Ralph’s Barbershop in Glenside.

Tony told us the story of how he found the dog. While out riding around in Kensington with a friend who was an off-duty Philadelphia cop, he spotted the dog tied to a pole. Making the decision to rescue what to him looked like a pooch in distress, Tony asked his friend to watch out for him.

Closer to the dog, Tony saw clear signs of abuse. “His pads were burned,” he told me between snips at the barber shop.

“So, when I cut the line tied to the pole, three guys come rushing out of the house with guns drawn.”

His friend drew his own gun and identified himself, which prompted two of the men to drop their guns and run, while the other just retreated into the house.

Tony took in the Staffordshire Bull Terrier/Boxer mix and started looking for a permanent home for this gentle beast. After a few failed attempts, Brutus found that home with Jenkintown resident John McGrath.

John describes Brutus as “a good boy” who can now look forward to a lifetime of treats, long walks, and plenty of love.
