Dr. Robert Allan Maxwell Jr., M.D., a retired US Army Captain, former oncologist at Abington Memorial Hospital and Holy Redeemer Hospital, and founder of Abington Hematology and Oncology Associates, passed away peacefully on August 15. He was 93.

A graduate of Yale University and the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC), Dr. Maxwell was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army Reserve. In 1958, he obtained his medical degree from the University of Louisville School of Medicine and subsequently interned, completed his residency, and did a fellowship with the Charlotte Drake Cardeza Foundation at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, his obituary said. 

Dr. Maxwell went on to serve as Captain of the US Army Medical Corps at Womack Army Hospital in North Carolina. After discharge from active duty, he joined the staff of Abington Memorial Hospital and Holy Redeemer Hospital. 

He later founded Abington Hematology and Oncology Associates, now known as Alliance Cancer Specialists. 

A Kentucky native, Dr. Maxwell was awarded the commission of Kentucky Colonel in 1992, which is the highest title of honor bestowed by the Governor of Kentucky, in recognition of his life of service, accomplishments, and character, his obituary said.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, August 27, 2026, All Hallows Episcopal Church, 262 Bent Road. Wyncote, PA 19095, where relatives and friends will be received after the service.
