Netanyahu, Cheltenham grad, seeking 6th prime minister appointment

Benjamin Netanyahu, who graduated from Cheltenham High School in 1967, is seeking a sixth term as prime minister of Israel.

Netanyahu, 73, was voted out of office in June 2021 after serving 12 years as Israel’s leader.

The controversial figure is Israel’s longest-serving head-of-state, winning a record five elections since the country was granted sovereignty 74 years ago. He is the head of the right-wing Likud party, and has successfully cultivated an image of Israeli security from hostile outside forces.

Netanyahu’s family moved to the Cheltenham area in 1963 when his father Benzion, a prominent historian and Zionist activist, was offered an academic position. He returned to Israel at the age of 18.
