US Navy names future ship the USS Travis Manion after LSCHS grad who was KIA in Iraq

Travis Manion, a 1999 graduate of La College High School in Wyndmoor and a Marine Corps 1st Lieutenant who was killed in action while serving in Iraq, will have an amphibious transport dock named after him, the U.S. Navy announced on Friday.

After high school, Manion attended the United States Naval Academy and served as a Marine Corps officer. The Silver Star recipient died on April 29, 2007 in Al Anbar Province.

“The San Antonio-class amphibious ship represents the combined power of the Navy and Marine Corps team and relies on the seamless integration of Sailors and Marines working together,” said Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro. “Here, at his alma mater, I am proud to announce that the next San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock, LPD 33, will be named USS Travis Manion, serving as a symbol of courage, bravery, and selfless service for all who follow in her wake.”
